Interview with Bart Lauwers: Building Smarter Futures

Interviewer: Bart, you’ve been in the UAE for a long time now, shaping the way design, technology, and sustainability meet in the built environment. How would you describe the industry right now?

Bart Lauwers:
The UAE is in a fascinating place — it’s ambitious, it’s creative, and it’s constantly evolving. There’s this incredible momentum here where innovation isn’t a luxury; it’s an expectation. What excites me most is how the industry has matured — we’re no longer talking only about aesthetics, we’re talking about performance, integration, and long-term value.

The conversation has shifted from “How does it look?” to “How does it live?” And that’s where By Bart finds its purpose — designing systems and environments that don’t just function beautifully, but live beautifully too.

Interviewer: You’ve built quite a name around intelligent systems and innovation. What does that mean in practical terms for your clients?

Bart Lauwers:
Innovation isn’t about adding more buttons or more gadgets. (laughs) It’s about making things simpler, smarter, and more efficient. Whether it’s automation that adjusts your lighting and irrigation based on time of day, or a movable pool floor that turns a swimming area into a terrace, it’s all about creating adaptable spaces.

What I do with By Bart Consultancy and our ecosystem — X-Panels Arabia, My Pool Cover, and our automation and purification systems — is bring these disciplines together under one philosophy: to make technology invisible.

“The best technology is the one you don’t see — you just feel the result.”

When systems talk to each other, life becomes smoother. And that’s what clients want — smart simplicity.

Interviewer: Let’s talk sustainability. Everyone mentions it, but how is By Bart actively making a difference?

Bart Lauwers:
Sustainability isn’t a checkbox for me — it’s a design principle. Whether it’s through modular building systems that reduce waste (like our X-Panels Arabia solutions), or intelligent water purification systems that reduce chemical dependency, everything we design is engineered for longevity.

Our My Pool Cover products, for instance, help reduce water evaporation and energy consumption dramatically. And our automation technology optimises how outdoor systems run — meaning less energy waste, less manual maintenance, and longer-lasting performance.

“True sustainability is when luxury and efficiency coexist effortlessly.”

It’s not about compromise — it’s about intelligent design.

Interviewer: You’ve worked across Europe and the UAE. What makes the UAE unique in terms of innovation and future potential?

Bart Lauwers:
The UAE is fearless. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can dream something ambitious and actually make it happen. That’s why I love living and working here. There’s such a strong alignment between the nation’s vision and my own belief that innovation should serve both people and planet.

Over the next five years, I see the UAE leading the world in smart infrastructure, sustainability-led construction, and experiential outdoor living. I think we’ll see even more cross-pollination between industries — automation meeting architecture, landscape meeting technology.

And I’m proud to say By Bart will be part of that transformation. We’re already developing systems that will redefine how homes, resorts, and communities operate — quietly, intelligently, and sustainably.

Interviewer: You’ve mentioned your Show Villa in Abu Dhabi a few times — tell us a bit about it.

Bart Lauwers:
Ah yes, my favourite topic! (laughs) The Show Villa is my playground — my living lab. It’s located on Al Jubail Island, which is one of the most serene and natural places in Abu Dhabi. There, we’ve integrated every system that By Bart stands for: automation, modular construction, water purification, and smart covers.

Visitors can experience how technology and design come together in real time — no theory, no brochure talk — just reality. It’s an open invitation to come and see innovation in action.

“When people walk into the villa, they don’t just see what we do — they feel it.”

Interviewer: If you had to predict what the next five years look like for the UAE’s construction and design industry, what would you say?

Bart Lauwers:
Smarter, faster, greener — and definitely more human. We’ll see construction driven by technology, but with warmth and personality. Automation won’t replace creativity; it’ll amplify it. And sustainability will become the standard, not the exception.

In the next five years, I think we’ll see entire neighbourhoods that operate like living ecosystems — connected, efficient, and sustainable. It’s not just the future — it’s already starting.

And that’s the exciting part: we’re not waiting for innovation to happen; we’re building it every day.

Interviewer: Final question — what drives you personally?

Bart Lauwers:
Curiosity. (smiles) I’ve always loved asking, “What if?” What if we could build faster without losing quality? What if we could make sustainability effortless? What if your entire outdoor environment could be controlled from your phone?

That’s what keeps me motivated — turning “what if” into “what’s next.”

“Innovation starts with curiosity and ends with improvement — and if it doesn’t make someone’s life better, it’s not innovation.”
